Roof Cleaning in Chelmsford
Chelmsford’s roofs span more than a century: Victorian slate in Moulsham and the centre, clay and concrete tiles in the established suburbs, and modern roofs on the new neighbourhoods. We clean roofs across the city by hand and with steam, never with a pressure washer.
Roofs vary too much to price blind, so we survey first. Guide prices start from £800.
Who removes roof moss in Chelmsford?
DB Professional Services removes moss from Chelmsford roofs by hand and with steam, so tiles are never blasted with a pressure washer. The older trees of Writtle, Moulsham and Hylands Park shade roofs and feed moss. Prices start from £800 after a survey. Call 01255 762761 to arrange a survey.

Big Victorian roofs
Some of the large Victorian and Edwardian houses in Moulsham and around the centre have steep, complex roofs with several chimneys and plenty of valleys. That’s where moss collects most, and where hand removal really matters, because each valley and chimney base needs clearing by hand before the steam goes on. Natural slate on these roofs can be brittle with age.
Suburbs and new estates
The established suburbs of Springfield, Great Baddow and Broomfield are dominated by concrete tiles, which moss grips easily, especially under the mature trees of the older roads and near the riverside parks. Bungalows and chalet bungalows there often have shallow rear slopes that turn green first. Roofs on the new estates, such as Beaulieu, are younger but already growing moss on shaded slopes.
Surveys across the city
We survey every roof before quoting, from terraces in Moulsham to detached homes in Writtle and Great Baddow. The survey tells us the tile type, how thick the moss is and how easy access will be. Parking on busy roads near the centre is planned in advance, and we’ll talk you through how the work will be done. Garages, porches and extension roofs can be added to the same quote, and it’s worth clearing the gutters afterwards, because loosened moss ends up in them.
You’ll have a firm price before anything is booked.
Chalet bungalows in the suburbs often have dormers with small, flat or shallow roofs that hold water and grow moss quickly. They’re cleaned by hand along with the rest of the roof. On the larger Victorian houses, bay roofs and porch canopies can be included too. Homes in the villages around the city, such as Writtle, Broomfield and Galleywood, are covered too, and their roofs are often shaded by large garden trees.
Roofs beside busy routes, such as the A12 and the roads around the Army and Navy junction, pick up traffic grime as well as moss, and steam lifts both without force. Parking on these roads is planned before the day.
Our method
We start with the bulk of the growth, lifting it off carefully by hand. Next, steam lifts the remaining growth and grime from the surface and between the tiles. Moss that falls is cleared away when we finish.

Listed homes and conservation areas
If your home is listed or in a conservation area, it’s worth checking with the council before any work on the roof. Steam and hand cleaning are gentle, but older roofs still need care, and we’ll tell you honestly if a roof isn’t suitable.
