Clay and slate on older buildings
Many older buildings in the village centre have clay tiles or slate, and some are listed. High-pressure water can strip the surface off old tiles and drive water underneath, which is why we only use hand removal and steam.
If your building is listed, it’s worth checking with the council before any work. Gentle cleaning rarely needs consent, but it’s your call.
Damp air by the Blackwater
Homes close to the river get damp mornings for much of the year, and north-facing roofs there grow moss quickly. After the clean, keeping the gutters clear helps the roof dry out and slows regrowth.
Estate roofs behind the High Street
The estates behind the old centre mostly have concrete tile roofs. Moss collects along the lower courses and in the valleys over porches and bays. We remove it by hand, steam the tiles and leave the roof draining properly again.
Gentle on tiles
Steam softens moss roots and lichen so they let go of the tile, without the force of a jet wash. Everything comes off by hand first, then the tiles are steamed.
