Seafront roofs
Roofs nearest the seafront take salt and wind, so lichen and salt staining are common, while moss is usually thinner than inland. Gulls pull at moss and push nesting material under tiles, and we clear it as we work. Seafront roofs often have salt crusting along the ridge and around the chimney, which the steam softens and lifts.
Older terraces and bungalows
The Victorian and Edwardian terraces near the centre often have slate roofs, which can be brittle with age; steam cleans them without force. Many have chimneys and bay roofs that collect moss. Bungalows and homes further back from the sea are more sheltered, and their shaded rear slopes grow thick moss. Homes near the backwaters often have damp, sheltered roofs too.
Surveys and access
Terraces near the centre often have tight access at the back, so we look at it during the survey and plan the work around it. Bungalows are usually straightforward. Once the moss is off, it’s worth clearing the gutters too, because loosened clumps can wash into them. You’ll have a firm price before anything is booked.
Walton’s seafront homes often have bay windows and porches with small roofs of their own, and they gather salt staining and moss in the corners. They’re included in the survey and cleaned along with the main roof. Some of the older terraces have decorative ridge tiles, and we work carefully around them.
Chalet bungalows inland have dormers and extra valleys where debris collects, and moss starts there first. Clearing those valleys by hand, then steaming the slopes, brings the roof back without forcing water under the tiles. Lower slopes above conservatories and extensions are cleaned with extra care, and we protect the glazing below while we work. Walton is close to our base in Clacton, so surveys are easy to arrange, and we cover Kirby-le-Soken and Frinton on the same days.
By hand and with steam
The clean is done by hand and with steam, whatever the roof is made of. Thick growth is removed by hand, a section at a time. Steam is far gentler on old clay and slate than a pressure washer would be. Scrapings are cleared up rather than left in your garden.

Listed homes and conservation areas
If your home is listed or in a conservation area, it’s worth checking with the council before any work on the roof. Steam and hand cleaning are gentle, but older roofs still need care, and we’ll tell you honestly if a roof isn’t suitable.
