Exposed or sheltered
On homes near the shore, wind dries the roofs, so lichen and salt staining tend to be the main problem. On sheltered roofs inland, behind hedges and trees, moss builds up on the north-facing slopes. In East Mersea, among the farmland, outbuildings and barns may have mossy roofs of their own.
Homes with sea views often have dormers or balconies, and their small roof sections collect moss in the corners. They’re cleared by hand along with the main roof.
Cottages and island bungalows
Garages and outbuildings can be surveyed at the same time.
Planning an island visit
Every island roof is surveyed before we quote, and you’ll have a firm price before anything is booked. Island roofs often have lichen on the exposed side and moss on the sheltered side, so the survey covers every slope of the house. Garages, porches and outbuildings can be added to the same quote, and they’re cleaned the same way, by hand and with steam. If you’d like the gutters cleared after the roof clean, that can be added to the same island visit.
Wind, salt and shelter
Older fishermen’s cottages near the waterfront may have brittle tiles, and the hand and steam method is gentle on them.
Cottages, bungalows and family homes
West Mersea’s oldest homes are the fishermen’s cottages close to the waterfront, many of them with older tiles or slate that have weathered decades of salt wind. Inland, much of the island’s housing is bungalows and family homes from the post-war years onwards, usually with concrete tiles. Both kinds of roof grow moss and lichen, but they need different levels of care.
On the older roofs we’re especially careful, which is exactly why we use hand removal and steam: it cleans the tiles without the force that could crack old clay or slate. On the newer concrete-tiled roofs, steam softens the moss roots in the joints so the slopes come back clean.
By hand and with steam
We take the moss off by hand and finish the tiles with steam. Hand scraping takes the moss off without putting stress on the tiles. Steam works with heat rather than force, so it’s much gentler on old clay and slate. If the roof isn’t suitable for cleaning, we’ll tell you honestly.

What the survey looks at
At a West Mersea survey we check the type of roof covering, its age and condition, the pitch, the access and how much moss and lichen there is. Then we give you a firm price and explain how the hand and steam clean will work on your roof.

Roof cleaning in West Mersea: your questions
Do you cover the whole island?
Yes, West and East Mersea. Call 01206 688698.
Can you clean a roof near the waterfront?
Yes. Waterside roofs are surveyed first and cleaned by hand and with steam.
Do salt and wind make moss worse?
Wind dries roofs, so exposed slopes often have more lichen than moss. Sheltered slopes are where thick moss grows.
Do you clean slate roofs?
Yes, by hand and with steam. Old slate can be brittle, so we survey it carefully first.
