Wivenhoe Roof Moss Removal

Wivenhoe’s roofs change as you climb from the quay: small cottages in the old town, big Victorian and Edwardian houses on the slope, and newer homes towards Wivenhoe Park. We clean roofs across the town by hand and with steam. We never pressure wash.

Use the builder below to request a survey; roof cleaning is priced from £800 as a guide.

Who removes roof moss in Wivenhoe?

The old town by the river

Much of the old town near the quay is a conservation area. Its cottages often have clay tiles or slate, sheltered by neighbouring buildings and kept damp by the river, so moss and lichen settle in. These roofs can be fragile, so we survey first and use only hand removal and steam. The lanes are narrow, so we plan parking and access before the day, and cottages that share roof lines with their neighbours are discussed with you first.

Larger houses and newer streets

On the slope above, the Victorian and Edwardian houses have big roofs with several slopes, valleys and chimneys, sometimes with decorative ridge tiles, and moss builds up thickest in the valleys. Towards Wivenhoe Park, newer homes have concrete or modern tiles, which moss grips on north-facing slopes, especially where the parkland trees cast shade.

Booking a survey

Every Wivenhoe roof is priced on survey. Wivenhoe is close to Colchester and easy for us to reach, so surveys are simple to arrange. We’ll look at every slope, plus any garage, porch or bay roof, and you’ll have a firm figure before anything is booked. Small roofs over bay windows and porches often collect moss of their own, and they’re cleaned along with the main roof. If the gutters have filled with moss from the roof, they can be cleared on the same visit.

Larger roofs up the hill

Hand removal lets us clear them carefully before steaming the tiles.

Near the river, old cottage roofs in the narrow lanes get a careful survey first. Parking and access in the old town are planned with you before the day.

Older cottages near the quay sometimes have dormers or small rear extensions with low roofs, and these collect moss in the corners where they meet the main roof. They’re cleared by hand as part of the job.

What the clean involves

We never pressure wash roofs; moss comes off by hand and steam does the rest. The heavy moss is scraped off by hand first, tile by tile, from the slopes, valleys and ridges. Steam works with heat rather than force, so it’s much gentler on old clay and slate. When we finish, we clear the debris from paths and gutters.

Gutters after a roof clean

Some moss inevitably finds its way into Wivenhoe gutters during and after a roof clean. It makes sense to have the gutters cleared afterwards, and our gutter vacuum works from the ground, so it’s a quick job to add on.

Roof cleaning in Wivenhoe: your questions

Do you clean Victorian roofs in Wivenhoe?

Yes, by hand and with steam.

Is the old town a conservation area?

Much of it is. Gentle cleaning by hand and with steam rarely needs any consent, but if your home is listed it’s worth checking with the council first.

Will moss fall into my neighbour’s garden?

We work carefully and clear up the moss that comes off, including from paths and gutters below.

Can you remove lichen?

Steam softens lichen, but old staining may fade rather than disappear. We’ll tell you what to expect at the survey.

Is my roof worth cleaning?

Usually, but if tiles are failing we’ll tell you honestly that it needs a roofer instead.
