Solar Panel Cleaning for Brightlingsea Homes
Salt and seabirds make Brightlingsea a demanding place for solar panels. With the Colne estuary and the open sea wrapped round the town, a dull salt film builds up on the glass and gulls leave droppings. Our pure water clean lifts that film and leaves the glass clear.
Count your panels, pop the number into the builder below, and the price appears.

Salt and gulls on the glass
Salt carried on the wind dries onto panels as a fine crust that scatters light and holds dust. Near the waterfront it builds up faster than anywhere inland. Gulls and other seabirds are everywhere in town, and their droppings bake on in summer and shade the cells beneath.
Away from the water, the salt eases off, but trees and garden birds take over.
How often near the water?
Near the waterfront, salt and droppings build up quickly enough that once or twice a year makes sense. Panels further inland, in the Victorian streets and newer estates, can usually go a year between cleans.
If you can see white streaks or dark spots on your panels from the ground, they’re dirtier than you’d think, because most of what lowers output isn’t visible from below.
Salt doesn’t just dull the glass. It also attracts and holds dust, so a panel near the water can lose output steadily without looking especially dirty from the ground. Many owners only notice when they compare their generation figures with the same month a year earlier. A clean usually brings the figures back up, and we’ll tell you if we spot anything else, such as gulls nesting underneath.
Homes on the newer estates along the road into town tend to have panels on shallow roofs, where grime collects along the bottom edge.
Waterside or inland
Brightlingsea is almost surrounded by water, with the Colne estuary on one side and Brightlingsea Creek on another. On homes near the Hard, the boatyards and the promenade, panels collect salt on almost every wind, and gulls are a constant presence. Inland, towards the Victorian streets and the newer estates along the road into town, salt eases off and garden trees bring pollen and leaves instead.
Whichever kind of home you have, the method is the same: pure water, no detergents, and a careful soak for anything stuck on.
Why we use pure water
The glass is cleaned with water that has been filtered to remove its minerals. Because it leaves no residue, there’s nothing on the glass afterwards to attract fresh dirt. Any lichen creeping in from the edges is lifted off. That’s all it takes: pure water and a careful hand.

The dirty bottom edge
As rain runs off a Brightlingsea panel it carries dirt down and leaves it along the lower edge of the frame. Over time a band of grime builds up there that can shade the bottom row of cells. Cleaning removes it and lets every cell see the light.
