Gutter Cleaning in Colchester
Colchester’s gutters work hard. Between Castle Park, High Woods Country Park and the mature trees along the roads of Lexden and Prettygate, a great deal of leaf litter lands on the city’s roofs each autumn, and it doesn’t take much to choke a run of guttering or the top of a downpipe. DB Professional Services clears gutters across Colchester with a high-reach vacuum that we operate from the ground, so nobody is clambering about on your roof.

Victorian terraces, new estates and everything between
In New Town and the streets just outside the old Roman wall, many homes are Victorian terraces with long, shared gutter runs and older downpipes at the back. One blocked section can overflow onto a neighbour’s wall as easily as your own, so we pay close attention to joints and outlets. Further out, the 1980s and 90s houses at Highwoods and the newer estates on the northern edge of the city have plastic systems that are simpler to clear but still fill with moss washed down from concrete tiles.
Access is the main thing to think about on a terrace. The front run can usually be done from the pavement. For the back, we need a side gate, a shared alley or your go-ahead to bring the hose through the house, and we’ll agree that with you before the day.
How the vacuum clear-out works
The vacuum head sits on the end of extending poles, and we steer it along the gutter from the ground, lifting out leaves, moss, silt and the odd lost tennis ball. The waste is drawn into the machine rather than dropped over your lawn. We work round the whole property, front and back, and finish by making sure the outlets are flowing so the rainwater can actually get away.
If we notice a sagging bracket, a leaking joint or a cracked downpipe while we’re there, we’ll point it out so you can decide what to do about it.

Signs a Colchester gutter needs clearing
On the older terraces the first clue is often inside: a damp patch high on a bedroom wall, or a musty corner that appears every winter. Outside, look for green streaks running down the soft red brick under the gutter line, or grass and even small saplings sprouting along the edge of the roof. Homes close to Castle Park and the tree-lined roads of Lexden tend to show these signs first.
On newer houses at Highwoods, Mile End and the northern estates the warning is usually water dripping through a joint over the front door, or a downpipe gurgling and backing up during a storm. Any of these is worth a look sooner rather than later, because water that overflows long enough will start to stain brickwork and soften fascia boards.
What it costs in Colchester
There’s no city surcharge. A 2-bed property is £100, a 2/3-bed semi £120, a 3/4-bed detached £140 and a 5-bed detached £160. If your home doesn’t fit neatly into one of those, give us a ring and we’ll talk it through. You can pay by card or by direct debit.
When to book
For most Colchester homes the best moment is late November or early December, once the street trees and garden oaks have dropped the last of their leaves. Houses under particularly big trees, or right beside the parks, may benefit from a second visit in spring after the seeds and blossom come down. How we look after the rest of the outside of your home is on our Colchester exterior cleaning page, and the full detail of this service is on our gutter, fascia and soffit cleaning page.
Gutter cleaning questions from Colchester
Can you clear the back gutters on a terrace with no side access?
Often, yes. We can work through a shared alley, or carry the hose through your house if you’re happy for us to. If none of that is possible we’ll clear the front and tell you honestly what we couldn’t reach.
Do you cover Stanway, Mile End and Wivenhoe?
Yes. We cover the whole of Colchester, including Lexden, Stanway, Highwoods, Greenstead, Mile End, Shrub End, Old Heath and Berechurch, plus nearby Wivenhoe and Rowhedge. Ring 01206 688698 if you’re unsure about your street.
Why are my gutters overflowing when they were cleaned last year?
Usually it’s a blocked outlet rather than a full gutter. A small plug of moss or leaves at the top of the downpipe makes water spill over even when the rest of the run is fairly clear, which is why we always check them.
